Tea
I love my tea, which as you can see, is rated PG.
But will not touch Lipton, even for free!
America’s favourite, should be rated X if
others, like myself, may find it offensive!

I believe the advent of the railroad apartment layout was economics and necessity. You will notice that most railroad apartments exist in what were once single-famiy dwellings. Rather than build walls where there were none, a kitchen and bathroom were sculpted into the existing layout, which did not have enough space to put in a hallway; or the cost would have eaten into the landlord's profits.

Fair comment, but for the wrong entry! I know it was about economics and it really still is. I think it used to be more acceptable, also. They just don't work for modern living. The one I saw in Astoria would have been a huge single family home! Similar conversions in England were never done in this fashion.
The question remains: If this is the way it was deemed most cost effective, why not put the bedrooms on opposite ends? Some have been switched to this format. But most have the front door at one end of the apartment, so this improvement is not really possible.
I'm suddenly reminded of the old tower blocks in England and the Projects here. Also done for economy, and also not designed with Human needs in mind.
