Il Cortile

On Friday, Jan and I went to Il Cortile, a superb restaurant in Little Italy - a lovely little stretch of Manhattan; really quite romantic to walk around. I’m sure everything on the menu is superb, but I must recommend the halibut, which was heavenly. I feel it my duty to inform people that the asparagus, which isn’t on the menu but we ordered as a side dish, turned up as a $15 item on the bill. Wow!

The restaurant largely emptied out between 9 and 10pm, and then an altogether different clientele came in. I have never seen anything like it. Everyone who walked in there looked like a character out of the Sopranos. It was quite an experience! I’d have loved to take a picture of them, but somehow think they wouldn’t have been happy with me doing so. And I really wouldn’t want to upset them. I really wouldn’t want to upset them! Of course, I could have said that I’m English and ask if I could please take a picture, but again, it didn’t take much thought to dismiss this. Not quite sure what I would have said if they had asked me why. And whereas I have missed out on a potentially great photo, I am alive, and on reflection, that is more important.
